Building 10 by 10: adding within 20 using 10 frames

It's time to build a buddy! We get to choose from different clothes, hats, glasses, action figures... so many things to add up. In this video, students learn to use ten frames to solve addition and subtraction problems. Ten frames help to teach conservation, meaning that a ten frame has ten spaces, so it will never have more or less. This method helps students anchor to ten, which supports mental math strategies and more difficult concepts in the future. Can my buddy have a ten frame too?
